What unlocks it
Garmin needs a handful of outdoor runs with heart-rate data before it will produce an estimate. The first one should appear during the Foundation phase.

Measurement caveats

Garmin's estimate is a model, not a direct measurement — it can drift with heat, fatigue, or a change in running economy that has nothing to do with actual aerobic capacity. It is tracked as a trend, not a lab-grade number, and never merged with a lab result if one is later obtained.
